“I’m busy” may be true. But it should not become the message your team receives.
People do not need unlimited access to a leader. They need dependable access. They need to know that questions will be answered, concerns will be heard, and their work will receive attention.
That kind of consistency builds trust. And trust gives people room to bring forward ideas, solve problems early, and stay connected to the mission.
Gallup has long pointed to communication as a foundation of healthy manager-employee relationships. Regular meetings and daily touchpoints—whether face-to-face, by phone, or digitally—are associated with higher engagement.
Try this simple leadership audit:
- How long do people usually wait for a response from you?
- Do they know when and how to bring you a decision or problem?
- Are your meetings creating connection, or only reporting activity?
Your availability is never neutral. It is always sending a message.
